WASHINGTON — Shoppers in Maryland and Virginia can expect to save some money as the two regions will hold their annual tax-free holidays.

Sales tax holidays are time periods that allow customers to make specific purchases without having to pay state and, occasionally, local sales taxes.

Virginia

The commonwealth's sales tax holiday will run from Aug. 1 through Aug. 3 this year. According to the Virginia Department of Taxation, the holiday will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Friday and end at 11:59 p.m. the following Sunday.

During the tax holiday, shoppers can purchase qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items, and Energy Star™ and WaterSense™ products without paying sales tax.
