HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ( WAFF ) - With the possibility of Alabama having to pay a larger share for SNAP benefits, state lawmakers are trying to find ways to save the state money. Which means recipients may have to be a little more selective when it comes to their shopping.
The federal government currently pays for 100% of SNAP benefits, but because of President Donald Trump’s spending package, that may change.
Starting in 2028, if the state’s error rate is over 6%, meaning 6% of SNAP dollars are distributed incorrectly, it could be required to pay millions towards SNAP.
Alabama’s error rate is already over the federal government’s threshold, meaning the state would have to pay around $103 million.
“That number’s gotten way out of control,” Representative Rex Reynolds said.
