Authorities have arrested Andrew James McGann, a 28-year-old elementary school teacher, in connection with the double murder of Cristen and Clinton Brink. The couple was fatally stabbed while hiking at Devil's Den State Park in Arkansas on July 26, accompanied by their two young daughters, aged 7 and 9. Fortunately, the children were unharmed and are now safe with family members.
Arkansas State Police announced the arrest on Wednesday evening, stating that McGann has been charged with two counts of capital murder. The incident occurred on a remote trail in the park, prompting a large-scale manhunt that lasted several days. Authorities received a call from the park's visitor center, where the young girls reported that their parents had been attacked.
Details surrounding the attack indicate that a knife was used, and there are reports suggesting that McGann may have sustained an injury during the incident. Initial investigations revealed that he was believed to have fled the scene in a black sedan with covered license plates.
McGann was apprehended by a plainclothes officer while getting a haircut at a barbershop in Springdale. A booking photo shows him still wearing a barber's cape at the time of his arrest. Prior to this incident, McGann had worked as a fifth-grade teacher in Oklahoma and was set to begin a new teaching position in Springdale for the upcoming school year.
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders expressed her condolences to the Brink family and commended law enforcement for their efforts in capturing the suspect. "No news can heal the enormous harm done to the Brink family in last weekend’s crime, but this announcement is a comfort and reassurance for our State," she stated. "Let there be no mistake – we do not tolerate violent crime in Arkansas."
As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to release more details. All charges against McGann are currently accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
