In the center of Patagonia, the town park has a new feature, though it’s not one most passersby will notice.

Right next to the gazebo, amid the picnic tables and greenery, a sleek gray box sits mounted on a telephone pole, just above eye-level. It’s not the most visually appealing box: simple plastic, plugged into an outlet at the pole’s base, with a small padlock clasping it shut. But it and several others scattered around the region serve an important purpose: monitoring the air for pollutants and updating the community in real time. ×
