KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — Knox County Commissioner Larsen Jay submitted an ordinance to repeal the county's wheel tax.
The wheel tax is $36 a year for all motorized vehicles and cycles. It was originally implemented around 20 years ago to pay for several projects, including the building of a new downtown library, which never got built, Jay said.
"I believe in small government and only charging the taxes and fees absolutely necessary to fund operations," Jay wrote.
Jay said the proposal would phase out the tax without impacting county services. He argued that this would make the county's auto dealers more competitive with the region at large, as six of the eight neighboring counties have no wheel tax.
