KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Knoxville Police Department and University of Tennessee Police Department plan to conduct a sobriety checkpoint near the UT campus on Thursday, August 28.

The officers plan to have the checkpoint on Volunteer Boulevard, where they will check drivers for signs of alcohol and drug impairment. This is to deter impaired driving, which may have contributed to 10 fatal crashes in Knoxville last year, police said.

KPD previously conducted a sobriety checkpoint on Kingston Pike on June 20, where they checked over 700 drivers. The Tennessee Highway Patrol has several checkpoints planned for different East Tennessee counties this month.

Law enforcement agencies are legally required to publicly announce the dates and locations of any checkpoints.
