More than a dozen people were treated for smoke inhalation and service was suspended on several New Jersey PATH lines for several hours Monday morning after a fire broke out underneath an eastbound train in Newport Station, officials said.
The blaze started at 6:19 a.m., filling the train with smoke, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said in a short statement. Passengers were evacuated from the platform, an agency spokesperson said.
Thirteen people were treated for smoke inhalation as a result of the fire, according to the Port Authority. Nine of those people were transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.
New York City Emergency Management also alerted commuters to the snarled service .
