SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. —

Federal officials in El Dorado County issued a health warning after elevated levels of E. coli were detected in South Lake Tahoe near the Camp Richardson Resort.

The resort found a leak in the sewer lines and began repairs, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit said on Friday .

In an update on Monday, the USDA said the contaminated soil was removed and the hole was backfilled with clean sand.

Although no illnesses have been reported, people were being advised to avoid swimming between Jameson Beach and Valhalla Boathouse.

E. coli can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting or a low fever, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .
