AALBORG, Denmark — The Aalborg Zoo in Denmark is in the spotlight after it used a post on social media to ask residents to consider donating “smaller pets” to the facility for use in feeding its predators.
“Chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs make up an important part of the diet of our predators," the post says. "In zoos we have a responsibility to imitate the natural food chain of the animals — in terms of both animal welfare and professional integrity."
The post says if residents have a pet that “has to leave here for various reasons,” they should consider donating it to the zoo. The pet is “gently euthanized” by the zoo staff and then used for “fodder.”
“That way, nothing goes to waste — and we ensure natural behavior, nutrition and well-being of our predators," the post says.
