Monitor Lizard’s final journey ends in tragedy after two years on the run
After nearly two years of mysterious sightings and social media buzz, the elusive monitor lizard that had captivated residents of eastern Mexicali met a tragic end this weekend.
Firefighters captured the animal Saturday morning after it was found inside a chicken coop in the Valle de Puebla neighborhood, where it had reportedly devoured three birds. Residents, alarmed and unsure how to respond, cornered the reptile and called emergency services. The 1.67-meter-long, 11-kilogram male lizard was captured and caged by firefighters before being transferred to the Mexicali Zoo.
