CHEROKEE, N.C. (FOX Carolina) - The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians announced that archaeological digs are causing partial road closures in Cherokee.
Officials said that the digs on Acquoni and Big Cove roads are part of a much larger effort to upgrade and replace aging water and sewer lines.
The archaeological assessments must be completed to ensure that cultural and historical resources are protected, said Principal Chief Michell Hicks.
Officials said the digs have yielded significant findings, including pottery dating back to approximately A.D. 500, as well as evidence of a storehouse and a possible summer house from around A.D. 1650.
Officials said that as of this week, the archaeological digs will be completed on Saunooke’s Village on the area of Big Cove Road.
