APEX, N.C. (WNCN) — Funeral plans and a scholarship fund were announced Tuesday for an Apex girl who was killed in what officials say was a weekend impaired boating crash at Harris Lake south of Raleigh.

Brooklyn Mae Carroll, 10, was killed in the Saturday afternoon crash near Cross Point Access Area, and a woman was seriously injured, with a leg amputated in the incident. A Moore County man was arrested and faces various charges, including DWI—boat, according to the N.C. Wildlife Commission.

In an obituary about Brooklyn, her family said she was a "shining light in the lives of everyone who knew her".

Brooklyn was a rising fifth grader at West Lake Elementary School in Apex and wanted to become a teacher, her family said.
