As part of fiscal year 2026 budget planning, Cameron County is proposing salary increases for elected officials closer to what their counterparts in Texas counties with similar populations are paid.
With a few exceptions, Cameron County’s elected official salaries are the lowest or among the lowest in the state compared to 22 peer counties analyzed, including some with lower populations, according to Cameron County officials.
The proposed maximum salary adjustments cover 31 elected positions, from county judge and commissioners to the county’s five court-at-law judges. The proposed adjustments to total compensation, published on Saturday in The Brownsville Herald and Valley Morning Star, include an increase of $18,845, from $98,364 currently to $117,209, for the county judge position.
