The U.S. Navy's next the next Arleigh Burke-class destroyer will be christened the USS Kyle Carpenter.
Carpenter, now 35, is a medically retired Marine and a University of South Carolina graduate. He received the United States' highest military honor, the Medal of Honor, for his actions in Marjah, Helmand Province, Afghanistan in 2010. Carpenter is the youngest living Medal of Honor recipient.
The USS Kyle Carpenter will be one of four new warships, along with USS Ray Mabus, USS Robert R. Ingram (DDG-149), and USS Everett Alvarez Jr.
Carpenter, then a Marine lance corporal, shielded a fellow Marine with his own body when a grenade was thrown into their sandbagged position. He was severely wounded, but saved his comrade's life.
He was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama
