Starting Friday at midnight, Golden Heart Plaza will be patrolled by an overnight security team, according to City of Fairbanks Mayor David Pruhs.

Pruhs informed the Fairbanks City Council during a Tuesday work session that Securitas had been awarded a three-month contract, which expires on October 31. The contract is expected to cost approximately $10,000 per month and will be funded from the city’s hotel/motel bed tax revenue.

“They will basically patrol from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.,” Pruhs said. “That is when the bad actors come out because we don’t have people down there protecting the plaza.”

He added that hopefully once cold weather sets in by Oct. 31, “it will keep the bad actors out of there.”
