DILWORTH — In the spring of 1931, on what was likely a perfectly respectable school day in Dilworth, Minnesota, three high school girls showed up to class dressed like — gasp — beachgoers. Not in swimsuits, mind you, but in the scandalous style of the day: wide-legged, colorful beach pajamas .

It didn’t go over well.

Teachers deemed the outfits “immoral” and promptly sent the pajama-clad girls home to change. Their crime? Choosing fashion and comfort over convention.

The girls reportedly formed a “council of war” with classmates, threatening to return that afternoon “in the garb of their choice.” It’s unclear if they did, according to the Forum reporter who was dispatched to cover the pajama rebellion in the town just east of Fargo-Moorhead.
