HINESVILLE, Ga. ( WTOC /Gray News) - Five soldiers were shot in an active shooter incident at Fort Stewart on Wednesday.

The shooting happened at the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area of the base. Law enforcement was dispatched to the area at 10:56 a.m.

The alleged shooter was apprehended at 11:35 a.m.

Nearby schools, including Kessler Elementary School, Murray Elementary School, Diamond Elementary School, Button Gwinnett Elementary, Joseph Martin Elementary, and Snelson Golden Middle School, as well as Liberty County schools, were put on lockdown.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said he is “keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers.”

Fort Stewart said the shooting is under investigation.
