COLUMBIA, S.C. — A suspect is now in custody after a shooting in the Newberry County town of Prosperity that briefly triggered a school lockdown.
The Newberry County Sheriff's Department said Wednesday afternoon that the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Elbert Epps, had been arrested.
Deputies said the shooting incident happened on Langford Street. No one was injured, but the suspect ran away from the scene. As a precaution, authorities locked down Prosperity Rikard School and the Mid Carolina campus. However, the suspect was found a short time later and school operations have now returned to normal.
Law enforcement has not yet said what led up to the shooting or what charges Epps may now face.
