LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- Michigan State University laid off 16 fixed-term faculty and three staff at the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. USAID funded all 19 employees' contracts, and significant federal cuts earlier this year eliminated that funding.

A fixed-term worker is someone whose job is usually linked to a specific project or funding source, such as a grant. Their employment often ends when the funding runs out or the project wraps up. In this case, the funding disappeared after the Trump administration cut USAID's funding.

The college had more than 30 employees working under USAID grants. A university spokesperson, Amber McCann, told 6 News that departments managed to "minimize the impact of the loss," which led to the 19 layoffs. McCann also said employees were not
