WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCBD) - The South Carolina Department of Agriculture encourages local communities to get out to their farmers market during National Farmers Market Week.

According to the SCDA, American farmers receive about 15.9 cents on the dollar of what people spend at big box stores. The rest goes toward marketing and distribution. However, farmers markets cut the middle cost and give customers lower prices while supporting local farms. Harrison Chapman, farmers market manager for the City of Charleston, said this week is about bringing more awareness.

"In our world, it's National Farmers Market Week every week," said Chapman.

Officials said for every dollar spent at the farmers market, three dollars go back into the local economy.
