Leaders in New Bedford, Massachusetts, are raising awareness about the need to be ready for hurricanes.

New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell declared Aug. 6 "Hurricane Preparedness Day." The city says August and September are historically when these types of storms often hit.

Mitchell held a news conference alongside his top emergency officials to go over readiness reminders.

"It is not a question of if, it is a question of when," said Mitchell. "It is a certainty that we will be hit with a hurricane."
