Two anglers are safe tonight thanks to the quick work of Anchorage firefighters.
It happened Tuesday afternoon at Ship Creek — a popular fishing spot for both locals and tourists. A man and a young family member were fishing from a sandbar when the tide suddenly came in.
Around 4:47 p.m., the pair realized they were surrounded by fast-rising water. The sandbar they stood on had vanished, leaving them in chest-deep water — wearing waders, but no life jackets.
Anchorage Fire Department crews from Station 1 and Station 4, along with a battalion chief and safety officer, responded quickly. Firefighters got the anglers into life jackets and safely brought them back to shore.
Paramedics evaluated both individuals on scene. Fortunately, neither needed to be taken to the hospital.
