A new security measure is being rolled out to help make schools safer. The Anchorage School District already used some of these in a pilot program during the last semester of the last school year, but now they're implementing them in a full program districtwide. These will be run by the Anchorage School District's Office of Emergency Management.
“What this is aimed to do is to bring these randomly to schools, particularly middle and high schools, and do some deterrent screening for weapons and other contraband being brought into our buildings,” said Jared Woody with the Office of Emergency Management.
The school district paid for three sets, but thanks to a grant, they were able to buy two more sets.
“There is a trend that more schools are installing these permanently in buildings. That
