The former Louisville police officer who was convicted of violating Breonna Taylor’s civil rights is appealing his recent conviction and sentence.
Last November, a 12-member jury found Brett Hankison guilty of violating Taylor’s civil rights. In July, Hankison was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Advertisement
Hankison fired 10 shots into Taylor’s glass door and windows during the raid but didn’t hit anyone. Some shots entered the next-door neighbor’s apartment.
Hankison argued throughout the trial that he was acting to protect his fellow officers after Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, fired at them when they broke down Taylor’s door with a battering ram. Walker shot and wounded one of the officer
