COLUMBIA (WGEM) - A Kansas City-area teen is the first-ever winner of the Missouri Civics Bee, a competition used to teach middle-schoolers about democracy, policy and civic engagement.

The bee encourages young Missourians to get involved in their local government and learn about the policies that shape our country. Nine middle school-age finalists competed by answering quiz questions and giving a presentation on an issue affecting their community and how they’d solve it.

The first-ever winner, Konnor, had the idea to improve recruitment for MoDOT so the roads in his hometown get more maintenance during the winter months.
