BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — If you happen to be out in a dark, clear spot during the next several nights, look up. The Perseid meteor shower will be visible in the skies over North Dakota throughout much of August, and will peak next week.

KX News spoke with Dr. Heather Wernke, a professor at the University of Mary with a background in astrophysics, about what makes the Perseids unique from other meteor showers, and how you can see them.

"So, a meteor shower is caused by a debris stream that's left by a comet in Earth's orbital path," Dr. Wernke said. "The Perseids are really well known. They cause really bright meteors. They have a large meteor-per-hour rate. Generally, we're seeing up to 100 meteors per hour for the Perseids."
