A 30-year-old man from North Carolina drowned over the weekend in Colchuck Lake, a popular hike in the Enchantments southwest of Leavenworth.
Dispatchers in Chelan County received a satellite text around 7:15 p.m. Sunday saying someone had been underwater for five minutes in the lake, about a 4-mile hike from the trailhead. Coordinates showed the person was on the west side of Colchuck Lake, according to the Chelan County sheriff’s office. Another person reported they were performing CPR on the possible drowning victim, who had been hiking with three other people.
At the request of the sheriff’s office, the U.S. Army sent in a hoist-capable helicopter from Yakima. The crew arrived in the area about 90 minutes later, while a search and rescue team was en route by ground.
