MERIDEN, Conn. (WFSB) - City officials are moving forward with a decision to shut down the city’s volunteer fire unit, a group that has supported the community for more than a century.
The volunteer fire company, based out of the Camp Street firehouse near the Meriden Markham Airport in South Meriden, has been in operation since 1908.
While the city’s six professional firehouses will continue operating as usual, the additional help from trained volunteers will soon come to an end.
Officials have not yet provided a reason for the shutdown or given a specific timeline for when volunteer operations will officially stop.
However, city leaders, including Mayor Kevin Scarpati and Fire Chief Cristina Schoeck, are expected to address the public at a press conference scheduled for Thursday at 4
