CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - An inmate died after being found unresponsive at a jail in Mecklenburg County Wednesday afternoon, according to the sheriff.

The 38-year-old man, who, as of this writing, has not been identified, died around 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6, at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center-Central.

He had reportedly been housed at the jail since 2023.

What we know

According to the sheriff, at around noon, the inmate was found unresponsive. Medical staff were immediately notified and began life-saving measures for the resident.

Despite those efforts, the man was pronounced dead about 40 minutes later.
