A tropical system off the Southeast coast is drifting northwest into the open Atlantic, easing the threat of heavy rain for the Carolinas, where several inches — and possibly double-digit totals in some areas — had initially been forecast through the weekend.

The National Hurricane Center has lowered the system’s chances of development to 30% over the next seven days.

So far this season, no storms have directly impacted North Carolina. However, Colorado State University meteorologists — who issued their latest forecast for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season on Wednesday, Aug. 6 — have given North Carolina the second-highest chance of being affected by a tropical storm this year.
