If you were surprised by the booming of fireworks over Boston Harbor on Wednesday night, you are not alone.

The display was part of the celebratory conclusion of the National Conference of State Legislatures, a gathering of lawmakers from around the country.

A closing reception for the conference was held at the Leader Bank Pavilion. It featured a private concert by Boyz II Men and an elaborate fireworks show.

While the conference agenda mentions the fireworks show, it was not widely publicized, and, as of July 25, no permit for the show had been posted online by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services .
