MARION, Iowa — The City of Marion, in collaboration with Monarch Research, has announced a new community tree-planting program aimed at replenishing the local tree population.

Residents can receive up to three free native Iowa trees to plant in right-of-way areas along City streets.

Marion Mayor Nick AbouAssaly highlighted the program's significance, stating, “Marion lost more than 41 percent of its public trees in the 2020 derecho.” He noted the progress made since then, with nearly 8,500 trees planted on public lands and many more on private properties due to community efforts.

Experts say street trees offer numerous benefits, including shade, stormwater runoff reduction, and improved air quality. They also contribute to traffic calming and enhance human health and mental wellbeing.
