A new nonprofit wants to build an eight-court volleyball facility near 30th Street and Folkways Boulevard in north Lincoln using a state turnback tax to help pay for it.

Nebraska for Volleyball, a nonprofit started earlier this year by former Husker Maggie Griffin to make volleyball more inclusive, is partnering with the city to build the facility on the edge of a new commercial area along 27th Street, not far from North Star High School.

At least three businesses are going up in North Star Crossing, including a Chick-fil-A, a Casey’s and a Tommy’s Car Wash, and developer Andrew Lerner said more retail is planned.

That’s key to the project, which hopes to use a turnback tax through the Sports Facilities Financing Act. The act allows the planned sports facilities to use sales tax revenue
