INDIANAPOLIS — A new pill for obese adults yields an average weight loss of about 27 pounds, the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Co.reported Thursday.

A new phase-three study of its once-daily medication orforglipron found it could be just as effective at lowering blood sugar and helping weight loss as injectable drugs such as Ozempic and Mounjaro.

“Obesity is one of the most pressing global health challenges of our time, driving global chronic disease burden and impacting more than one billion people worldwide,” Lilly Cardiometabolic Health President Kenneth Custer said in a statement.
