SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- Most drivers in crashes aren't drinking alcohol but the percentage increases with fatal crashes, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

The DPS just released its 2024 Motor Vehicle Crash Summary which includes data on fatal crashes, injuries classes, ages and more.

Drinking drivers make up 3% of all motor vehicle crashes for 2024, but 25.5% of all drivers in fatal crashes had been drinking in 2024. Those drinking in injury crashes made up 7% of the drivers.

In total, the state had 146 fatalities in 2024 compared to 140 in 2023. Fifty-eight people were killed in alcohol-related crashes compared to 37 in 2023.

The state had 18,686 reported motor vehicle crashes in 2024 which is down from the 18,796 in 2023.
