EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A local nonprofit that provides kids from low-income backgrounds with free swimming lessons needs more financial support after seeing an increase in sign ups.
Stages of Freedom is a Rhode Island nonprofit organization that aims to address inequality in a variety of ways, including through their swimming empowerment program.
Executive Director Ray Rickman joined 12 News on July 23 to share more about the program.
"We provide swimming to any low-income person who reaches out to us," Rickman explained.
The Providence Journal has reported that, since Rickman was interviewed by both the Journal and 12 News, enrollment has "spiked."
Rickman told the Providence Journal that 290 kids were signed up for swimming lessons through Stages of Freedom in July.
