NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - As the new school year begins across Tennessee, so does the first year of the state’s expanded school voucher program, known as Education Freedom Scholarships.
The program, administered by the Tennessee Department of Education, is offering 20,000 vouchers worth nearly $7,295 each to help parents cover the cost of private school tuition.
Half of the scholarships were earmarked for families whose income falls below pre-determined income levels, while the remaining half were open to anyone who applies.
Parents were required to prove their state residency, and the scholarships were awarded on a first-come, first-served basis through an online application process that opened at noon on May 15.
