PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - Summer is a peak season for violent crimes nationwide , but local organizations are working to provide safe and fun alternatives all summer.

“I think all parents want to make sure their kids are in a safe, educational place during the summer, just as well as during the school year,” said Joy Holmquist, the program director at Art Inc.

Summer gives kids a much-needed break from school work, but with extra free time, area camps are filling the gap, providing a positive and structured environment.

Across the River City, the Peoria Park District runs six summer camps for kids five to 13.

“They form relationships, they learn how to interact with people, they learn to take turns, and to be kind humans and to have fun,” said Jess Main, a camp manager for the Peor
