GiLA BEND, AZ (AZFamily) — The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is thanking its maintenance workers for helping save a woman who became trapped in a Gila Bend canal earlier this week.

A 58-year-old woman slipped and fell into the canal, located near the ADOT yard in Gila Bend, on Tuesday. According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, the woman was carried away by the fast-moving current and spent the night clinging to a floating tire next to railroad tracks.

On Wednesday, employees at the ADOT maintenance yard heard the woman yelling for help and jumped into their vehicles to follow the sound. The crew ultimately found her struggling in the water about a quarter of a mile away. At that point, the workers linked arms and extended a shovel to pull her from the water.
