TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Florida's Commissioner of Agriculture told Floridians to drop the raw milk after over 20 people fell ill in connection to the consumption of raw dairy products.
On Aug. 4, the Florida Department of Health said 21 people, including six children, got sick from Campylobacter and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli after consuming raw milk produced by Keely Farms Dairy in New Smyrna Beach.
Seven of these people were hospitalized, and two suffered "severe complications, according to health officials.
In response to the illnesses, Commissioner Wilton Simpson urged Floridians to drink pasteurized milk rather than untreated raw milk, which can contain harmful bacteria.
