HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A moped rider injured in a crash on Kapahulu Avenue early Saturday morning has died.

It happened at around 2:50 a.m. north of Mooheau Avenue.

According to police, the 78-year-old male moped rider was traveling northbound when he hit a 77-year-old male pedestrian who was walking in a marked crosswalk against the red palm signal.

The pedestrian was taken to the hospital in good condition.

The moped rider was ejected onto the road and initially hospitalized in serious condition. His condition worsened and he was downgraded to critical condition.

Police said he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

On Wednesday, Aug. 6, the medical examiner’s office notified police that the man had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
