SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- We are well into August and that means surrounding schools will soon be ready for students.

But unfortunately, some students aren't as ready, because they still need school supplies and that includes some Native American students on our tribal reservations.

Life in Lower Brule isn't always easy.

"I'm going to be real, you know every kid down there is in need, the reality is we live in high poverty, reservations have been known as some of the most impoverished communities, not just in South Dakota, but in the whole country," Kansas Middletent said.

That's why Kansas Middletent and his fiancée, Sen Skunk, started 'Rising Stars' as a way to give back.

'Rising Stars' is in its 8th year of collecting school supplies to give to children on the reservation.
