BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO) - Employees of the four South Dakota newspapers that shut down this week are figuring out what to do next.
As of Wednesday, The Brookings Register, Moody County Enterprise, The Plainsman and The Redfield Press are no longer publishing stories after their parent company, News Media Corporation, told newsrooms to shut down immediately.
The Redfield Press's general manager, Kayla Jessen, said over the phone Thursday her staff had no idea the cut was coming.
"We honestly did not have any inkling that this was going to happen. We found out about 3 p.m. yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, and that was the end of it," Jessen said. "The doors immediately got closed, then they were shut down."
