ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Thursday, August 7 was National Purple Heart Day, which honors those who have been wounded or killed while serving the United States. New York State lawmakers gathered at the Capitol to call for Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign a bill that would recognize New York as a Purple Heart State.
The bill has bipartisan support. It passed in both the state senate and assembly this session. It's now waiting on the governor's signature.
The designation is reserved for states that show overwhelming support for veterans, particularly those who have been killed or injured in action.
Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer, and Saratoga Counties have already received a Purple Heart designation.
