WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. —
A North Carolina hero stepped up during Wednesday’s shooting at Fort Stewart in southeast Georgia. He was one of six men and women honored for their courageous actions after a shooter injured five soldiers.
Sgt. Joshua Arnold is a senior enlisted maintenance supervisor from Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He started at the Army base at Fort Stewart in 2023.
Arnold says he was doing paperwork in his conference room with a colleague when he heard loud noises.
"I thought, 'That sounds like a gunshot,'" he said. "That sounds like a gunshot."
Arnold was right. Officials say a soldier at the base, logistics Sgt. Quornelius Radford fired his personal handgun, striking several soldiers. However, Arnold didn’t know that in the moment, but he knew something was wrong.
