SHREVEPORT, La. — Truancy remains a significant concern in Caddo Parish, where 10 unexcused absences in a school year can result in a student being referred to juvenile court.

While the truancy rate in the parish saw a slight improvement last year, dropping to 48.6% from 53.56% the year before, the issue continues to raise alarms among educators and community leaders.

"When a child is not in school, they're not learning, and it could be a pathway to more severe life consequences," said Alex Person, The Harbor community engagement director.

Person emphasized that even small improvements in attendance are important signs of progress.
