The Zoning Board of Appeals voted to approve a request for a special permit for Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s proposed Complex for Waterfront Access to Exploration and Research (CWATER) on Water Street, which required the special permit due to the project’s location in a flood zone.

The CWATER project will include demolishing and redeveloping the Smith Laboratory and improvements to the Iselin waterfront complex.

The special permit granted by the ZBA is the last permit needed for the project and allows for “alteration of a landform” and for the redevelopment of a “non-residential structure” within a flood zone.
