An East Boston man was ordered held without bail Wednesday after he allegedly attacked a person with a hammer as they exited a bakery Tuesday morning, according to police and court records.
Eric Vargas, 37, was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and was arraigned Thursday in East Boston District Court, where a judge ordered him to be committed to Bridgewater State Hospital for psychiatric observation, according to court records.
Police said the victim reported that he was walking into a bakery at 40 Maverick Square about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday when a man, later identified as Vargas, walked up to him and asked to use his cell phone. The victim told Vargas he didn’t have one and walked into the bakery, police said.
