Steinbach Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) says it will continue to operate, even though City Council is ending its funding commitment. At Tuesday's City Council meeting, the decision was made to continue funding through to the end of 2025 and then end its commitment.
Mayor Earl Funk says this pilot project started five years ago, with a sunset clause of December 31, 2025.
Councillor Jac Siemens says several individuals ran for City Council in the 2018 election, campaigning for economic development. Eventually, the SEDC was launched, with Council committing $65,000 per year for five years. The project started in 2021, and the funding commitment will wrap up at the end of this year.
Siemens says it is difficult to evaluate whether or not the project is working.
