The Birmingham neighborhood in east Toledo, once the hub of the city’s Hungarian community, has had a rough few decades.

The slow loss of businesses and long-time residents has resulted in a smaller community. In 2021 the neighborhood suffered two very significant losses in a single month.

Louis Takacs, the third-generation owner of Takacs Grocery & Meats, died April 4. Located at 1956 Genesee St. since the late 1930s, the grocery store ended up closing for good.

Just three weeks later, on April 25, Mark Hubscher, owner of the Rumpus Room, a legendary east Toledo bar, died. Known as “Hubs,” Mr. Hubscher was a long-time friend of Mr. Takacs.

Like the grocery store, the “Hunky Town” bar in the 2200 block of Consaul Street, established in 1915, also closed its doors.
